Last week donors and board members came together to recognize the generous sponsors of the annual Hillsides gala that will be held on Saturday, February 28 at The Langham Huntington, Pasadena. This sponsor reception was held at Bistro 45 in Pasadena and hosted by the proprietors and gala co-chairs Deborah and Robert Simon. During the reception, Robert Simon eloquently spoke of the theme of the gala, Hillsides Uncorked! as a celebration of not only the sustainability of the food and wine that will be featured at the event but of how Hillsides is a source of sustainability for all the children, youth, and families we serve.
When you think of sustainability, you think of food that is locally grown, organic, and part of an eco-system that is replenished from one generation to the next. It is an appropriate metaphor for the many services and programs offered by Hillsides to nearly 9,000 individuals last year. All our efforts are focused on sustaining the children we serve and their families. Although vulnerable and challenged, these children and families, when nurtured, are able to overcome obstacles. Together we assist these families to provide a nurturing environment within which their children can be kept safe and benefit from the support and care that only a family can provide.
As with any worthwhile endeavor, the challenges can be daunting. However, for families we serve, the care we offer allows them to heal from the traumas they have experienced and hope for happier days. The task of effectively assisting families and children to come together is an important effort that helps them achieve sustainability. Reunification of these families allows children to be nurtured within their family and community of origin, freed from the traumas they have experienced and able to grow up surrounded by people who love them.
The theme of sustainability is very apropos for Hillsides. It takes many hands to support an organization that sustains such vulnerable children, youth, and families. At the donor recognition event last week, we recognized all those who support this very important fundraising event to help sustain Hillsides as an organization that remains ever-faithful to our mission of creating lasting change.
